A second year medical student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has been rescued from a suicide attempt.
The said incident took place on Tuesday evening. In a widely circulated video on social media, the male student was seen attempting to jump from the fifth-floor balcony of the six storey Brunei hostel.
However, the colleagues of the student arrived just in time to prevent him from carrying out the act after successfully pulling him back to safety. The student was then rushed to the hospital for medical attention.
Speaking on behalf of the university’s managment, Dr. Daniel Norris Bekoe, the Public Relations Officer of KNUST, disclosed that the student is currently receiving medical treatment and is in a stable condition now.
“For now, he is stable and investigations are ongoing to find out the cause of his attempted suicide and the various support systems that we can afford him.”
He further encouraged students to seek for support from counsellors in times of distress and not resort to such extreme measures.
Meanwhile, the university has urged media outlets to refrain from disclosing the image and name of the student to the public.
