The Electoral Commission (EC) has discredited a notice of poll shared on social media regarding the upcoming Kumawu by-election, stating that it is false.
An internet post featured a notice of poll displaying two independent candidates dressed in kente cloth, each with a bird symbol.
However, the EC issued a statement to clarify that a preliminary notice of poll had been created and submitted to the Commission for approval at the district office. This draft notice of poll included pictures of the independent candidates with similar names, clothing, and symbols.
The EC emphasized that this draft notice of poll had neither been approved by the Commission nor officially published in the gazette. Therefore, the version being circulated on social media was never gazetted.
“The attention of the Electoral Commission has been drawn to a Notice of Poll circulating on social media purporting to be that of the Kumawu By-Election. The Notice of Poll has the photos of two Independent Candidates, wearing kente cloth. The said Candidates have the symbol of a bird”.
The EC in its statement added that it applied the Public Elections Regulations and assigned the second independent candidate a hoe as his symbol after he refused to heed advice to change his symbol.
