Management of the Eastern Regional Hospital, Koforidua, has revealed that non-communicable diseases (NCDs) accounted for the top 5 causes of mortality at the hospital in the year 2024.
They revealed this during the 2024 performance review of the hospital.
It revealed that stroke, heart failure, prematurity, renal disease, and neoplasm were the leading causes of death at the hospital.
The Medical Director for the hospital, Dr. Arko Akoto Ampaw expresses that these NCDs are primarily caused by lifestyle choices and urged the public to adopt healthy habits to prevent them.
He encouraged regular check-ups, healthy eating, exercise, reduced alcohol consumption, and avoidance of tobacco substances.
A detailed breakdown of mortality data showed that stroke (cerebrovascular accident) claimed 180 lives, while heart failure accounted for 102 deaths.
Additionally, 100 premature infants did not survive, renal disease caused 96 deaths, and neoplasms (cancer-related conditions) led to 95 fatalities.
Notably, HIV/AIDS ranked 9th among the top 10 causes of death at the hospital, with 59 reported cases.
The hospital’s performance review aimed to assess its activities, identify successes and challenges, and develop strategies for improvement.
