The Mamprusi Traditional Council has demanded the immediate lifting of the curfew imposed on Nalerigu and its surrounding communities, describing the decision as arbitrary, unjustified, and a blatant disregard for the authority of the Nayiri.
In a strongly worded statement issued by the Nayiri Palace on Monday, July 28, the Council condemned the government’s imposition of the curfew, which took effect on July 27 and spans from 2:00 PM to 6:00 AM daily.
The curfew follows the tragic killing of two students of Nalerigu Senior High School by unknown gunmen on Saturday, July 26.
While suspicions have linked the incident to the ongoing Bawku conflict, the Mamprusi Traditional Council insists that Nalerigu, which has remained peaceful, should not be treated as a conflict zone.
“The Palace expresses its deep displeasure and dismay at the arbitrary and unjustified manner in which this curfew has been imposed,” the statement read, warning that such actions erode trust and undermine collaboration.
The Council further rejected the government’s rationale that the curfew was necessary to evacuate students, calling it “unfortunate and unconvincing.”
It issued a three-point demand: an immediate end to the curfew, a full and transparent investigation into the killings, and a formal apology to the Nayiri and the people of Mamprugu.
Stressing that peace in the region must be preserved through respect and dialogue, the Nayiri Palace cautioned against unilateral security decisions that ignore local context and traditional authority.
