President John Dramani Mahama has commenced a four-day state visit to Jamaica, underscoring Ghana’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), and advancing the international campaign for reparatory justice.
The President arrived in Kingston on Sunday, August 2, where he was welcomed at the Norman Manley International Airport by senior Jamaican government officials, marking the start of a visit expected to further cement the longstanding friendship between the two Commonwealth countries.
The visit is aimed at enhancing diplomatic engagement while creating new opportunities for collaboration across key sectors of mutual interest. Officials from both countries are expected to hold discussions on ways to deepen partnerships in trade, investment, education, agriculture, tourism and the creative arts.
Economic cooperation and increased people-to-people exchanges are also expected to feature prominently on the agenda as Ghana and Jamaica seek to broaden existing ties and unlock new areas of collaboration.
President Mahama’s visit also places significant emphasis on the global push for reparatory justice. Ghana and Jamaica have consistently championed calls for greater international recognition of the enduring effects of the transatlantic slave trade, slavery and colonialism, while advocating constructive dialogue and appropriate reparative measures for communities affected by those historical injustices.
The state visit reflects the deep historical and cultural connections shared by both nations through their common African heritage and decades of diplomatic relations. It is expected to reinforce political, economic and cultural cooperation while reaffirming the shared commitment of Ghana and Jamaica to strengthening Africa-Caribbean relations.
