The escalating conflict in Bawku took a dramatic turn on Thursday, April 10, 2025, when unidentified youth vandalized and partially set fire to the residence of Bawku Central Member of Parliament and Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga.
The attack, which is believed to be linked to the town’s deep-rooted chieftaincy conflict, has heightened concerns about the growing instability in the area.
Security sources have confirmed that the military swiftly intervened and has since taken strategic positions throughout Bawku to prevent further violence.
The arson attack comes on the heels of deadly clashes the previous day between youth factions and law enforcement, which left one person dead and several others injured.
The violence reportedly erupted after a group of youth ordered market women from a rival faction to vacate a trading area, sparking a confrontation that escalated into an exchange of gunfire with police.
In addition to the attack on Ayariga’s residence, the unrest also resulted in the burning of the Bawku Divisional Police Commander’s house and other police infrastructure.
While security patrols have been intensified, the atmosphere in Bawku remains highly volatile. Authorities are urging calm as efforts continue to restore order in the troubled municipality.
