President John Dramani Mahama has administered the oaths of office to three newly appointed Justices of the Supreme Court, charging them to uphold the Constitution and safeguard the independence of the judiciary.
The three Justices are Sophia Rosetta Bernasko-Essah, Edward Amoako Asante and Anthony Forson Jnr, a private legal practitioner and former President of the Ghana Bar Association.
They were sworn into office on Thursday, September 10, 2026, after receiving approval from Parliament.
At the ceremony, President Mahama emphasised the importance of the Supreme Court to Ghana’s constitutional democracy, describing it as the country’s highest judicial authority.
He said the Court’s decisions have far-reaching implications for the interpretation of the Constitution, the resolution of major national issues and the development of Ghana’s laws.
President Mahama urged the newly appointed Justices to discharge their responsibilities independently and impartially, without fear, favour, affection or ill will.
“The oath you have taken today is consequential, not ceremonial. It is a solemn covenant with the people of Ghana. It requires you to administer justice without fear or favour, affection or ill will, and to defend the Constitution of Ghana at all times,” he said.
He noted that public confidence in the judiciary is closely linked to the ability of the courts to determine cases fairly and independently, particularly matters involving politically sensitive or complex issues.
The President also called for continued reforms within the judiciary to improve the efficiency and accessibility of justice, including the effective use of technology in court administration.
He urged the new Justices to let the Constitution guide their decisions and approach their judicial duties with humility, patience, courage and fairness.
President Mahama congratulated the three Justices and expressed confidence that their experience and legal expertise would contribute to strengthening Ghana’s justice system and restoring public trust in the judiciary.
