Private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, has been released from detention after being arrested by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and detained for almost five hours on Wednesday, December 3, 2025.

Mr. Kpebu, who had honoured an invitation by the OSP, was reportedly arrested for allegedly obstructing an OSP officer. He was subsequently detained and granted bail with strict conditions, including the requirement to show proof of landed property in his name and provide one surety.

Speaking in an interview with TV3 shortly after his release, Mr. Kpebu described his detention as “needless”, insisting that he had committed no offence.

“I know I have not done anything wrong, so I knew I would be released,” he said.

Mr. Kpebu confirmed that he had an altercation with a military officer at the OSP, which he believes contributed to the incident.

“The military officer said I am stupid, and I also said he is stupid. So we exchanged words,” he recounted.

He also launched fresh criticism against Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng, calling him “incompetent”. According to him, the circumstances surrounding his arrest only reinforce his concerns about the OSP’s leadership.

Mr. Kpebu further repeated his intention to petition President John Mahama for the removal of the Special Prosecutor.

“I will petition for his removal. I have 15 charges against Kissi Agyabeng,” he stated.

The lawyer had visited the OSP in connection with some allegations he had made against Mr. Agyabeng. However, he insisted that he would not cooperate with any investigative process unless the committee handling the matter is independently set up.

Before his arrest, Mr. Kpebu told JoyNews’ Fatawu Bayaga that earlier attempts to resolve the matter were mishandled.

He said his two previous visits to the OSP were “botched,” explaining that he was made to appear before officers who report directly to the Special Prosecutor.

“Subordinates can’t investigate their boss. It’s incompetence,” he argued.

Despite the confrontations and his strong criticisms, Mr. Kpebu maintains he is willing to cooperate once an independent investigative committee is properly constituted.
