The running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 general elections, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has called on victims of the Adum Bluelight fire incident in Kumasi’s Central Business District to remain united in their efforts to rebuild.
During a visit to the site on Wednesday, March 2, 2024, he commiserated with the affected traders and assured them of his full support in restoring the market.
To aid the rebuilding process, Dr. Opoku Prempeh donated GH₵50,000 and 500 bags of cement to the traders.
He further pledged an additional GH₵100,000 from the Manhyia South MP’s Common Fund to assist in reconstruction efforts. Urging the victims to stay united, he noted that division would only slow down their recovery.
“I know Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the regional minister, Kennedy Agyapong, and others have visited you. Even President Mahama and some NPP executives have been here as well. If I don’t come, it would not be fair to you,” he remarked.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh emphasized the personal impact of the disaster, expressing empathy for the traders.
“The woes of your brother are your woes as well. I have been affected personally by the fire outbreak. It is only when you get affected that you can testify how painful it is. I pray that God comforts you and brings you back on your feet. Those of us who have taken up politics must know that we use people to build a nation, not money,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, also contributed 100 bags of cement to support the reconstruction efforts.
