The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has hinted at a comprehensive plan to reform Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) processes in response to recent controversies surrounding the re-collation of election results in nine constituencies.
Speaking on ABC Midday News on Tuesday, Deputy Director of Elections for the NDC, Dr. Rashid Tanko Computer, expressed deep dissatisfaction with the current state of the EC, describing it as a “complete crime scene.”
“Very soon, you will hear from us. We are putting a comprehensive reform together,” he announced.
“My boss is working on it. The directorate, in collaboration with other stakeholders, will come out with very concrete reforms that we think must be brought to bear on this current EC. What is going on is not good for our democracy at all.”
Dr. Tanko further assured the public that the reforms would be aimed at strengthening the credibility and transparency of electoral processes to prevent discrepancies in future elections.
This comes amidst sharp criticism from the NDC’s Director of Elections and IT, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, who previously lambasted the EC over its decision to re-collate results.
In a Facebook post, Dr. Omane Boamah accused the EC of being “criminal,” “incompetent,” and “biased,” asserting that its justification for the re-collation failed to consider the different Constitutional Instruments (C.I.s) governing such cases in the past.
“This criminal Electoral Commission is both incompetent and bias! They don’t even know or refuse to appreciate that different Constitutional Instruments (C.I.s) have governed some of these cases. Meanwhile, they’ve called for an emergency IPAC meeting after their mess,” Dr. Omane Boamah stated.
The NDC’s leadership has been vocal in its call for accountability and reforms to ensure the sanctity of future elections, as the party works on presenting its proposals to the public and relevant stakeholders in the coming weeks.
The Deputy Secretary of NDC, Mustapha Gbande, following this re-collation has dared the Electoral Commissioner Jean Mensah to conduct any form of re-collation.
According to him, the EC has demonstrated nothing but failure throughout the electoral process.
“We need Ghana to be peaceful.”
“The inconsistencies on her (Jean Mensah) path is enough to demonstrate classical incompetence doing anything possible to render this country chaotic.”
“I am daring Akufo-Addo and the EC, they should try the recollection. They will do it in the sky.”
“I am advising the NPP, that they have lost and if they have any basis to dispute the result that have been declared, they should go to court.”
