The National Identification Authority (NIA) has introduced mandatory biometric verification for Ghana Card identity checks marking a significant step towards strengthening Ghana’s national identity verification system.
Under the new directive, institutions and organizations are required to verify the identity of Ghana Card holders using biometric authentication instead of relying on photocopies of the card. The measure is aimed at reducing identity fraud, preventing impersonation and enhancing the security of transactions across both the public and private sectors.
The NIA says the biometric verification system will provide a more reliable means of confirming an individual’s identity by matching fingerprints or other biometric data with records stored in the National Identification System.
The policy is expected to impact services in the banking, telecommunications, insurance, healthcare and public sectors where the Ghana Card has become the primary means of identification.
Authorities believe the move will improve confidence in Ghana’s digital identity system while protecting citizens against identity theft and other forms of fraud.
