Dr. Richard Anthony, the Medical Director of Tema General Hospital, has issued a statement clarifying that no lives were lost in the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) following a two-hour power outage.
The statement, dated March 27, 2024, addresses concerns raised by a circulating publication on social media alleging fatalities resulting from a power cut at the facility.
Dr. Anthony provided a situational report of the incident, explaining that the power outage occurred on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, when there was an interruption in power supply from the national grid. Consequently, the hospital had to rely on its power plant to maintain electricity.
During the outage, the dedicated generator serving the NICU briefly malfunctioned, but the hospital’s electricians promptly rectified the issue, ensuring continuous power supply to the unit until the national grid was restored.
The Medical Director emphasized that power was reinstated within two hours, thanks to the swift action of the hospital’s electricians. Importantly, he stated that no lives were lost as a result of the temporary power outage.
“It must be emphasized that power was restored within two hours by the electricians at the facility,” the Medical Director said, adding “It is worth noting that no lives were lost as a result of this power outage.”
Dr. Anthony reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to prioritizing the health and safety of its patients above all else. He assured the public that the hospital will continue to uphold stringent measures to safeguard the well-being of its patients and provide quality healthcare services.
