The New Patriotic Party (NPP) appears to be facing internal strife as key party officials have expressed sharp criticism toward a faction of Members of Parliament (MPs) who have broken away from the party.
Speaking in an interview on ABC News, the 3rd vice chair of the NPP, Alhaji Masawdu described MPs who abandon or break away from the party after benefiting from its resources to run as independent aspirants as “ungrateful”.
His comment comes in the wake of the dropping out of incumbent MP of Walewale, Lariba Zuweiratu Abudu, from the NPP parliamentary primary in Walewale which has been marred by violent clashes. This development has raised suspicion over the likelihood of the MP to break away from the NPP to run as an independent.
Meanwhile, some NPP MPs have declared their intention to run as independent candidates after losing out in the NPP primaries. They include MP for Suhum, Kwadjo Asante, Cynthia Morrison, who is the current Member of Parliament for Agona West, former NPP MP, Vincent Sowah Odotei, Ken Kurachie and Ohene Kwame Frimpong
Despite the suspicions, Alhaji Masawdu insisted that the Walewale parliamentary seat is a safe seat for the NPP and applauded Lariba Abudu’s decision, highlighting her commitment to the party.
“The leadership of the NPP has applauded her for her diligence and the honorable thing she has done. That shows how patriotic she is,” he said.
