Political scientist Dr. Jonathan Asante has called for a total restructuring of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership in the wake of its unprecedented defeat in the 2024 general elections.
In a discussion with ABCNews, Dr. Asante emphasized that it is unacceptable for a party to suffer a major electoral loss while in power and retain the same leaders who were responsible for that defeat.
“If the party decides to keep its current executives, it would clearly signal a failure to learn from the lessons of the 2024 election,” he stated. He believes that without a significant overhaul, the NPP risks remaining in a state of political stagnation.
Dr. Asante further proposed that the NPP’s ongoing “thank you” tour should have been rebranded as a “Unity Tour.”
He explained that the current tour largely serves to promote the party’s image and reinforce its grassroots presence, but renaming it to emphasize unity would have been a more strategic move.
He argued that a “Unity Tour” would have allowed the party to showcase its commitment to healing internal divisions and prepare the ground for upcoming internal elections.
The call for restructuring and unity comes at a crucial time for the NPP, as it grapples with the aftermath of a crushing electoral defeat.
