The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has scheduled a re-run of the Walewale parliamentary primary for Sunday, September 8, 2024.
This decision follows the annulment of the previous results by the Tamale High Court.
The court, presided over by Justice Richard Kogjawah, ruled that the initial election was marred by irregularities, including impersonation and over-voting, which necessitated a fresh election.
In response to the court ruling, the NPP General Secretary announced new timelines for the re-run election. Nominations will open on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, and close on Thursday, September 5.
Candidates must submit their nomination forms along with a non-refundable filing fee of GH¢35,000.
Women, youth, and persons with disabilities (PWDs) will benefit from a 50% rebate, reducing their fee to GH¢17,500. Those who previously paid the filing fees will not be required to pay again.
The primary election dispute began when Dr. Kabiru Mahama narrowly defeated Hajia Lariba in January, with Dr. Kabiru securing 345 votes against Hajia Lariba’s 338.
Dissatisfied with the results, the incumbent MP challenged the election outcome in court, citing electoral irregularities and malpractice.
