Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an aide to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has reportedly been arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) at the Accra International Airport.
The reported arrest was disclosed by the NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, in a Facebook post on Sunday.
According to Mr Kodua, Mr Aboagye was picked up by EOCO officers with the assistance of immigration officials at the airport and taken into custody.
He alleged that the NPP aide’s lawyers have been denied access to him, while his current whereabouts remain unknown.
The NPP General Secretary further claimed that no charges have been filed against Mr Aboagye following his reported arrest.
Mr Kodua called on the authorities to grant Mr Aboagye immediate and unrestricted access to his lawyers and family, citing Article 14(2) of the 1992 Constitution, which guarantees the rights of persons in custody.
He described the reported arrest as an act of intimidation rather than a legitimate law enforcement process, alleging that it forms part of what he called a pattern of politically motivated invitations, arrests and detentions involving members of the opposition party.
The NPP General Secretary cautioned state institutions against being used as political tools, stressing that public agencies must operate within the confines of the law and respect constitutional rights.
The party also stated that Mr Aboagye, who recently declared his intention to contest for the position of NPP National Communications Officer, has been vocal on national issues, including criticism of the government’s handling of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
The NPP further called for Mr Aboagye’s immediate release or, alternatively, that he be formally charged and brought before a court in accordance with due process.
The party reiterated its call for EOCO to allow Mr Aboagye access to his legal representatives and family.
EOCO has not yet issued an official statement regarding the alleged arrest or responded to the claims made by the NPP.
The circumstances surrounding Mr Aboagye’s reported detention remain unclear, with further updates expected as more information emerges.
