A Deputy General Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has criticized the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for what he describes as a “lazy job” in its investigation into the Airbus bribery scandal.
Speaking in an interview on Thursday, August 8, Mohammed argued that the OSP failed to thoroughly examine the UK court ruling that implicated former President John Mahama as “Government Official 1” in the scandal.
He asserted that a deeper investigation into the UK court’s judgement and legal references could have provided more substantial evidence for prosecution.
The criticism comes after the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, announced that his office found no evidence of bribery involving John Mahama or his UK-based brother, Adam Mahama.
The OSP’s investigation also concluded that the procurement processes for the military aircraft adhered to necessary standards.
However, Mohammed insisted that the OSP’s work was “shoddy” and fell short of the thoroughness required for such a high-profile case.
He emphasized the importance of pursuing all available evidence, suggesting that the NPP’s lawyers would be reviewing the OSP’s report for further action.
Despite the OSP clearing Mahama of corruption allegations, Mohammed claimed that the investigation confirmed Mahama’s identification as “Government Official 1,” which strengthens the NPP’s stance.
He reiterated that “crime has no expiring date” and suggested that the case could be revisited in the future.
Mohammed also indicated that the NPP is satisfied with the identification of Mahama in the scandal, stating, “The NPP will state our position, but we are very happy that Government Official 1 is clearly John Mahama.”
