Over 6,000 eligible voters are expected to cast their ballots today, Friday, July 11, 2025, in a high-stakes parliamentary rerun across 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency.
The fiercely contested vote is meant to bring closure to months of political and legal battles that have left the constituency without a parliamentary representative since the disputed December 2024 general elections.
The rerun follows intense wrangling between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), with both sides trading accusations over missing endorsements and faulty collation sheets.
The impasse began after only 59 of the 62 polling stations had their results certified by the Electoral Commission (EC).
While a High Court ruling in January 2025 directed the EC to complete the process, the Commission instead declared a rerun in 19 polling stations, citing irregularities.
That decision triggered outrage within the NPP, which insisted its candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, had already won with a 414-vote margin. The party filed for an injunction, but on July 9, the Accra High Court dismissed the case as “unmeritorious.”
Despite the party’s boycott, Nana Akua Afriyie has broken ranks and is contesting in today’s rerun, buoyed by a groundswell of support from local NPP leaders, MPs, and grassroots activists.
“I am contesting. We are fully prepared. We are going for this contest,” she declared on July 10.
Meanwhile, the NDC has thrown its full weight behind its candidate Ewurabena Aubynn, who it claims won the original vote.
“The people of Ablekuma North are ready for change, and Ewurabena Aubynn represents that change,” said Joshua Alabi, Greater Accra Regional Director of Elections.
The Electoral Commission has assured stakeholders that today’s rerun will be conducted in a transparent and credible manner.
Deputy EC Chair Dr. Bossman Asare said heightened security has been deployed to safeguard the vote, though the Defence Minister has ruled out military involvement.
