Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin, declared that Ghana’s democracy emerged as the ultimate winner in the December 7 elections.
Speaking during today’s parliamentary sitting at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC), he emphasized, “Ghana’s democracy is the ultimate winner of this election.”
The session follows an official circular from the Speaker’s Office on December 11, confirming the venue for the sitting.
Speaker Bagbin had earlier summoned Parliament to resume on December 2, citing the importance of the session in light of the recent political developments and the election outcomes.
In the December elections, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) secured a parliamentary majority, significantly shifting the balance of power.
Several high-profile New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament, including Ursula Owusu-Ekulful, Henry Quartey, KT Hammond, and Andy Appiah Kubi, lost their seats, contributing to the changing political landscape.
NDC’s John Dramani Mahama also triumphed over Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the presidential race, further cementing the NDC’s dominance.
Before the elections, Speaker Bagbin had postponed a pre-election sitting despite calls from the Majority Caucus to address urgent legislative matters, a decision that sparked debate among lawmakers.
Today’s sitting is expected to focus on post-election transitions, the legislative priorities for the incoming administration, and other key governance matters.
