The Ashanti Regional Police Command has launched an investigation into a fatal shooting incident in Nyinahin on Thursday, April 24, 2025, which left one person dead and three others injured.
The incident occurred around 11:00 a.m. during a funeral procession along the Kumasi–Bibiani Highway.
According to police reports, tensions escalated when a military truck stopped the group upon spotting a mourner wearing military camouflage.
Witnesses say soldiers confronted the individual and attempted to remove the attire, leading to an altercation.
During the clash, a soldier allegedly shot the mourner, identified as Akwasi Lala, also known as Kushivi in the head, killing him on the spot. Further shots were reportedly fired by the military to disperse the crowd, injuring three additional mourners.
They are currently receiving treatment and are in stable condition.
Police responded swiftly, collecting evidence at the scene, including spent shell casings, and have since taken the deceased’s body to the Nyinahin Community Mortuary for autopsy.
Ashanti Regional Police Commander DCOP Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe visited the scene and the injured, assuring the community of a thorough and impartial investigation.
Authorities are now working with the Central Military Command to ensure the soldiers involved cooperate with the inquiry. The public has been urged to remain calm and support the investigation process.
