The Ghana Statistical Service has projected that Ghana’s population will soar to 52.5 million by 2050, an increase from the 30.8 million recorded in 2021.
This projection, detailed in the 2021 Population and Housing Census Thematic Report on Population Projections, suggests that the country’s population will grow by 1.7 times over the next three decades.
The report highlights the importance of these projections for policy and planning, especially in addressing demographic shifts and sustainable development.
“Ghana’s population is projected to increase from 30.8 million in 2021 to 52.5 million in 2050 according to the recently released 2021 Population and Housing Census Thematic Report on Population Projections. The projected population in 2050 would be 1.7 times the size of the enumerated population in 2021,” the release indicated.
The data highlights an ongoing change in the age structure, with the proportion of the population aged 0 to 14 expected to decrease from 35.3% in 2021 to 29.1% by 2050.
Conversely, those aged 60 and older are projected to increase from 6.5% to 10.8% in the same period. By 2030, Ghana’s population is anticipated to reach 37.2 million, with an estimated annual increase of over 700,000 people.
Urbanization is also set to rise, with urban areas expected to house 60.7% of the population by 2030.
