Minister-Designate for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has refuted claims that President John Dramani Mahama intends to cancel the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy.
Speaking during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 20, he affirmed the government’s commitment to refining and expanding the initiative.
“Let me assure this committee that President John Dramani Mahama has no option to cancel Free SHS. Even during his campaign, he made it clear that he would expand Free SHS,” Iddrisu stated.
He emphasized that the proposed review would make the policy more effective and inclusive, aligning it with constitutional provisions to prioritize educational accessibility for all.
Haruna Iddrisu also announced plans for a stakeholder forum to engage educators, policymakers, and other experts in shaping improvements to the programme.
He stressed President Mahama’s dedication to addressing gaps in the current system while ensuring the sustainability of Free SHS.
“The important thing is that he will subject the Free SHS to a review,” Iddrisu noted, adding that the government remains focused on strengthening the education sector.
This assurance comes amid public discussions on the sustainability of the policy, introduced by the Akufo-Addo administration, which was a central topic during the 2024 campaign.
