Professor Patrick Asuming, an economist at the University of Ghana Business School, has urged the government to take decisive action in reducing Ghana’s reliance on foreign aid by addressing public sector inefficiencies and strengthening revenue collection.
Speaking on ABC in The Morning, he emphasized the need for a clear and actionable roadmap to achieve economic independence.
“If we really want to go beyond aid, what we would have done is have a roadmap, a strategy, and action points with timelines,” he stated.
According to him, while it may be difficult for the new administration to tackle this challenge, it also presents an opportunity to reset the country’s aid dependency agenda.
“It is something the government can do if it implements the necessary governance reforms,” he added.
Reflecting on the previous government’s approach to the “Ghana Beyond Aid” policy, Asuming criticized its execution, arguing that it lacked proper implementation.
“Ghana Beyond Aid became more of a slogan than a specific strategy to really wean ourselves off aid,” he remarked.
He urged the government to take a more structured and strategic approach in ensuring the country moves towards economic self-reliance.
