Prosecutors in Sweden have dropped a rape investigation involving Real Madrid football star Kylian Mbappé, citing insufficient evidence to proceed. The investigation, which stemmed from allegations related to Mbappé’s visit to Stockholm in October, concluded without charges or formal notification of suspicion against any individual.
Lead investigator Marina Chirakova stated, “During the course of the investigation, there has been a designated person suspected on reasonable grounds of rape and two cases of sexual assault, but my assessment is that the evidence is not sufficient to proceed and the investigation is therefore closed.”
While prosecutors did not publicly name the suspect, Swedish media widely reported that Mbappé was the focus of the inquiry. Mbappé’s representatives and legal team had previously dismissed the allegations as “totally false” and “a slanderous rumour.”
Mbappé’s lawyer, Marie-Alix Canu-Bernard, and his representatives have yet to comment on the latest developments. The footballer’s visit to Stockholm in October occurred during a break in the Spanish league, fueling media speculation at the time.
The case’s closure brings an end to weeks of scrutiny surrounding the French football star, who continues to focus on his career with Real Madrid.
