Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has recalled Parliament from recess for an extraordinary sitting on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, amid calls for parliamentary scrutiny of recent cocaine seizures linked to Ghana.
The sitting is scheduled to begin at 12 noon at Parliament House in Accra, according to a notice issued by the Speaker on Thursday, September 24.
The recall was made pursuant to Article 112(3) of the 1992 Constitution and Order 53 of Parliament’s Standing Orders.
The notice directed Members of Parliament to report for the sitting but did not indicate the specific matters to be considered by the House.
The recall also follows a request by the Minority in Parliament to take action over a series of major narcotics seizures, including the seizure of nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine at the Port of Dunkirk in France from a container that had departed Ghana.
The request was led by First Deputy Minority Whip Habib Iddrisu, with the MPs invoking Article 112(3), which provides for the convening of Parliament upon a request by at least 15% of its members.
The Minority is seeking parliamentary scrutiny of Ghana’s port security and customs procedures, intelligence systems and the operations of state institutions responsible for preventing and combating narcotics trafficking.
The concerns follow heightened attention to cocaine consignments associated with Ghana after the French seizure and other reported narcotics seizures involving shipments linked to the country.
Parliament’s September 29 sitting is therefore expected to provide an opportunity for lawmakers to raise questions about the circumstances surrounding the seizures and the effectiveness of existing systems for detecting and preventing illicit drug trafficking through Ghana’s ports.
