The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has called on Ghanaians to rally behind the government’s efforts to combat illegal small-scale mining, also known as galamsey.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, September 11, the Ministry highlighted the importance of responsible mining to safeguard the environment and protect communities affected by mining activities.

Jinapor emphasized the need for a united front, urging citizens to put aside partisan differences and support the fight against the environmental degradation caused by galamsey.

Jinapor, together with ministry officials, engaged with Regional Ministers to review current efforts in addressing illegal mining.

During the meeting, additional measures were adopted to tackle the problem comprehensively.

The government remains committed to its dual strategy of reformative actions and strict enforcement.

Regional Ministers, along with their Regional Security Councils (REGSEC), have been tasked with intensifying enforcement actions to curb illegal mining in their respective regions, the Ministry stated.

The statement also stressed the government’s commitment to enhancing community mining schemes through the Minerals Commission to ensure that legal and responsible mining practices are upheld.

“We entreat all and sundry to support these efforts to enable us to protect our environment, preserve our water bodies, and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come,” the Ministry urged.

Jinapor further called for national discourse on the issue to remain non-partisan, emphasizing that the fight against galamsey is a national cause that requires collective action.
