Teacher unions have agreed to call off their planned strike following an engagement with the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, over concerns about the placement of teachers on the appropriate salary scales.
The meeting focused on resolving issues surrounding the salary-scale placement of affected teachers, with the Ministry of Education providing assurances and outlining concrete measures to address the concerns raised by the unions.
As part of the resolutions reached, teachers will not be required to travel to their respective District Education Offices to submit payslips for the purpose of salary-scale placement.
The Ministry also disclosed that close to 80,000 teachers will be appropriately placed on their correct salary scales as part of the process.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) is expected to provide the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department with the requisite data to facilitate the necessary adjustments and payments to affected teachers.
Following the engagement and the measures agreed upon, the teacher unions have agreed to call off their threatened strike action.
The Ministry of Education expressed appreciation to the leadership of the teacher unions for what it described as constructive engagement and their commitment to resolving the matter in the interest of Ghana’s education system and the welfare of teachers.
The Ministry further reaffirmed its commitment to working with all relevant stakeholders to ensure that teachers receive their rightful entitlements in a timely and efficient manner.
