Tragedy struck on the Winneba-Apam highway on Monday afternoon when a head-on collision claimed the lives of three students and a taxi driver at Natwibuw in the Central Region.
The students, from Uncle Rich and St. Paul Basic Schools, were returning home around 4 p.m. when a Toyota Rav4, registered GN 5507-18, reportedly attempted a wrongful overtaking and crashed into their taxi, CR 748-20.
Eyewitnesses say the taxi driver died instantly, and one student was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two other students succumbed to their injuries later at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba, bringing the death toll to four.
Emergency teams faced significant difficulty retrieving the taxi driver’s body from the wreck. Two more students survived and are currently receiving treatment.
