Two people have lost their lives while five others suffered injuries following a devastating road crash involving four vehicles at Birimso Bridge along the Accra–Kumasi Highway (N6) in the Eastern Region.
The accident, which occurred on Monday, involved a fuel tanker, a State Transport Corporation (STC) bus, a Mitsubishi Pick-Up and a KIA Sorento. The impact of the collision sparked a massive fire that engulfed several of the vehicles.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said the fuel tanker, the STC bus with registration number GS-7050-22 and the Mitsubishi Pick-Up, bearing registration number GE-8602-17, were completely consumed by the blaze. The KIA Sorento, registered GT-8601-14, also sustained extensive damage.
According to the Eastern Regional Fire Command, firefighters from the Bunso Fire Station, led by Assistant Divisional Officer Grade I (ADOI) Samuel Doe, were among the first emergency responders at the scene. They were later reinforced by a crew from the Suhum Municipal Fire Station under the command of ADOI Moses Quaye, who worked together to bring the fire under control and prevent it from spreading further.
The GNFS said seven people—made up of five men and two women—were involved in the crash. Two of the victims were pronounced dead, while the remaining five sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The injured were transported to the Osiem and Kibi Government hospitals for treatment.
Personnel from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service in Kibi also assisted with traffic management and other emergency response efforts at the scene.
Firefighters later carried out mop-up operations to secure the area after extinguishing the flames.
Authorities are yet to determine the cause of the crash, with investigations currently underway.
