Senior university staff across Ghana have declared an indefinite nationwide strike beginning today, Wednesday, May 21, over what they describe as the government’s persistent failure to honor a six-month-old agreement.
The action is being led by the Senior Staff Association of Ghana in collaboration with the Technical University Administrators Association of Ghana (TUWAG) and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSAG).
The leadership of the unions has directed all members to stay home until their demands are fully met.
George Ansong, National Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Ghana, described the strike as a necessary but difficult decision.
“The Technical Universities Administrators Association of Ghana (TUWAG) and the Federation of University Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSAG) announce, with deep regret but unwavering resolve, our decision to embark on an indefinite strike action,” he said.
He accused successive governments of neglecting the welfare of university staff despite repeated engagements and extended deadlines.
Mr Ansong emphasized that efforts to resolve the issue amicably had been exhausted.
“Countless engagements and goodwill efforts extended to the government” had been met with “persistent inaction, neglect, and blatant failure,” he said, adding that the government’s actions have “undermined the trust and cooperation that should exist between both parties.”
