The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has confirmed the arrest of three officials overseeing the ongoing 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for engaging in exam malpractice.
The arrested individuals include two invigilators and one supervisor who were allegedly caught using their mobile phones to assist students at their respective centres.
Breaking the news was WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, stated, “So far everything has been moving smoothly. But the unfortunate thing is that we have picked up about 2 invigilators and 1 supervisor who used their phones to help students. So our officers have picked them up, and they will be handed over to the Police.”
He further confirmed that the arrests were made across three regions: Greater Accra, Ahafo, and Bono East.
WAEC has assured the public that stringent measures have been implemented to detect and prevent malpractice during the examination period, which runs from June 11 to June 18.
This year’s BECE involves 603,328 candidates nationwide—297,250 males and 306,078 females.
The Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, has also issued a stern warning to all candidates and officials, urging strict professionalism and zero tolerance for cheating.
