President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to transforming the Volta Lake into a major economic corridor as part of the newly introduced 24-Hour Economy policy.
Speaking at the official launch of the policy on Wednesday, July 2, Mahama declared that the initiative is not only about job creation and productivity but also a revival of Ghana’s founding vision.
“Today we are recreating Kwame Nkrumah’s dream,” he stated, referencing the late leader’s ambition to use the lake for more than hydroelectric power—expanding its role into agriculture, irrigation, logistics, and transport.
Mahama explained that the 24-Hour Economy policy marks a move from “slogan to strategy,” with Volta Lake development positioned as a central pillar.
“We needed an integrated, bold, and coherent approach… The 24-Hour Plus program is that answer,” he said.
He added that the policy will support agro-processing, ferry services, and new logistics networks around the Volta basin to connect the North and East.
Emphasizing a private-sector-led model, Mahama assured Ghanaians that “the government will facilitate and not dominate” the rollout of this ambitious programme.
