Constitutional lawyer Kwame Adofo has called for greater public scrutiny of the ongoing removal process of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, following her legal challenge at the Supreme Court.

According to him, the reliefs being sought by the suspended Chief Justice highlight serious legal and constitutional concerns, particularly regarding the neutrality of the committee set up to investigate her.

“The CJ’s relief underscores the conflict of interest of some committee members,” Adofo said.

His concern specifically centres on the presence of Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang on the committee, whom he claims has a direct link to the subject matter of the petition.

“Because I now know, some of the petitioners—the subject matter of the petition—contains rulings made by Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang,” Adofo noted.

He questioned the fairness of the process, pointing out, “This is a clear case of conflict of interest. And you see nothing wrong?” in reference to Pwamang’s role.

This comes after the Chief Justice filed an interlocutory injunction on May 21, 2025, seeking to halt all proceedings by the six-member committee appointed by President John Mahama.

The committee, which includes Justices Pwamang and Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu, among others, is tasked with investigating the petitions that led to her suspension under Article 146(10).

The CJ’s application also seeks to suspend the operation of the presidential warrant for her suspension until the Supreme Court rules on the matter.
