The Volta North Regional Police Command has issued a stern warning to drug traffickers and peddlers following the destruction of a massive cache of cannabis in the Hohoe Municipality.
Speaking during the exercise on Thursday, the Regional Commander, DCOP Kofi Blagodzi, reiterated the Police Service’s zero tolerance for narcotics.
“We will not accept narcotics,” he said emphatically. “We all know the effects of them. And so we are sending a strong warning to those involved that once you are caught, you will be dealt with. The law will catch up on you.”
The police, acting on a court order, incinerated 61 sacks of cannabis—each containing 40 compressed parcels—at a designated refuse dump site in Gbi Wegbe. The large haul had been in police custody for months pending forensic analysis and the conclusion of court proceedings.
According to DCOP Blagodzi, laboratory tests conducted by the Ghana Police Forensic Science Laboratory confirmed the substance as cannabis. “Since it’s been already tested, and the samples have been taken, it’s appropriate to destroy the rest,” he noted.
The seizure forms part of a broader clampdown on the illegal drug trade in the region, which has seen several arrests in recent months. DCOP Blagodzi confirmed that some suspects linked to the intercepted narcotics are already facing trial.
The operation highlights the commitment of the Volta North Police to fighting drug-related crime and safeguarding communities from the dangers of narcotics abuse and trafficking.
Residents of the area, who witnessed the destruction, praised the police for their vigilance and called for continuous efforts to rid the region of drug-related activities.
