A broadcaster with Wontumi Radio and Wontumi TV, Gordon Asare Bediako, has defended the company’s operations following the detention of his colleague, presenter Akyemkwaa Nana Kofi Asare, at the Police Headquarters in Accra.

Speaking from the premises on Wednesday, August 13, Bediako insisted, “We have not flaunted any law. We have done all that is required of us.”

He disclosed that the station had written to the National Communications Authority (NCA) on June 30 regarding regulatory matters, but the lack of a governing board at the Authority had stalled certain processes.

The development comes after the NCA suspended the operations of nine radio stations across the country, including three owned by Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi.

According to the NCA, the affected stations had failed to address breaches such as the unauthorised use of Studio-to-Transmitter Link (STL) frequencies and the operation of unapproved transmitter locations, contrary to Regulation 54 of the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1991).

Bediako maintained that Wontumi Radio and TV had complied with all requirements and expressed hope that an upcoming meeting with the NCA would “see how best they can solve the matter.”

He also raised concerns about what he described as “living dangerously in Ghana,” stressing the need for transparency in law enforcement operations.
