On the occasion of World Environment Day 2025, Awulah Serwah, Executive Director of Eco-Conscious Citizens, has called for a nationwide ban on single-use plastics in Ghana.
Speaking to ABC News GH on Thursday, June 5, she stressed that the fight against environmental degradation cannot be won unless the country tackles plastic pollution head-on. “We need to ban single-use plastic. We need to be strong to say we don’t need plastics,” she stated.
Emphasizing the damage being caused to ecosystems, she described the continued use of plastics as “irresponsible” and urged authorities to instead support and encourage businesses that produce sustainable alternatives, such as reusable carriers.
World Environment Day 2025 is being marked under the global theme “Beat Plastic Pollution,” and Serwah’s call aligns with this year’s focus.
Meanwhile, schools, communities, and organisations are participating in various environmental actions—from tree planting to clean-up campaigns.
