The Electoral Commission (EC) has issued a warning to Ghanaians about the dangers of misinformation and fake news as the country approaches the 2024 general elections.
Dr. Serebour Quaicoo, the EC’s Director of Training, emphasized the importance of consuming only verified information throughout the electoral period to avoid unnecessary confusion and tension.
“My greatest fear for Election 2024 is misinformation,” Dr. Quaicoo said in an interview on Tuesday, November 12.
Dr. Quaicoo highlighted concerns that both traditional and social media often rush to share news without proper verification, which could lead to the spread of misleading or unrelated content.
“I am seeing ahead of us where people will come out with some videos that may not even be related to Ghana’s election,” he noted.
The EC urged the public to remain vigilant and rely on trusted sources to ensure accurate information circulates before, during, and after the elections.
