The Ghana Police Service has arrested former Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, along with two others, in connection with a violent clash that erupted during a football match, leaving one person dead.

The incident unfolded on February 2, 2025, during a heated match between Nsoatreman FC and Kumasi Asante Kotoko FC at Nsoatre in the Bono Region. What started as a tense encounter on the pitch quickly descended into chaos, bloodshed, and political scandal.

Alongside Baffour Awuah, the police have detained Agyemang Duah Owusu and Kyeremeh Joseph, both of whom are suspected to have played key roles in the violence. According to a police statement issued on February 3, the trio is currently assisting with investigations.

The case took a shocking turn when a search of Agyemang Duah Owusu’s residence uncovered two bloodstained dresses and an MP 23 pistol loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition. Authorities are now working to determine whether these items are linked to the fatality that followed the match.

In response, Inspector-General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has assured the public of a full-scale investigation while extending condolences to the bereaved family and the leadership of Asante Kotoko FC. A special Criminal Investigation Department (CID) task force has been deployed to support the Bono Regional Police Command in unearthing the truth.

The game itself was a fiercely contested battle, culminating in four red cards being issued after tempers flared between players. But the real storm broke after the final whistle, as supporters clashed violently in what police have described as a stadium riot gone horribly wrong.

As the investigation continues, questions loom over Baffour Awuah’s involvement, the escalating violence in Ghanaian football, and the political fallout from this shocking event.
