The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the University of Ghana (UG) to reduce residential facility fees by 25% for both new and continuing students.
This decision was announced on February 6, 2025, following a meeting between the Minister, UG Vice Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Amfo, and the Student Representative Council (SRC) at the Ministry of Education in Accra.
“I have asked the Vice Chancellor to reduce the residential facility fees by 25 percent and have subsequently instructed her to engage the SRC in future fee-related decisions,” Haruna Iddrisu stated.
Prof. Nana Aba Amfo confirmed the University’s compliance with the directive, saying, “We have listened to our Minister and our students, and we can afford to reduce fees by 25 percent across the board. Going forward, there will be adequate student engagement.”
SRC President Maradona Adjei Yeboah, popularly known in the music industry as ‘Guru’ welcomed the reduction but called for refunds for students who had already paid the higher fees.
“We are thankful for the reduction as it eases the burden on parents, but there should be a refund for those who have already paid,” Yeboah insisted.
UG management revealed that about 80% of students had already made payments before the directive was issued.
