Deputy Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Madji Jilbril, has dismissed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to boycott the upcoming parliamentary rerun, stating emphatically that it will not halt the process.
“NDC are not the ones conducting the election, it is the EC, and boycotting it will not stop them,” he said.
Jilbril pointed out that political party boycotts are not new to Ghana’s electoral history and emphasized that the rerun, scheduled for this Friday, will proceed as planned.
Describing the NPP’s actions as “mischievous,” he questioned their decision to take their concerns to the public instead of waiting for the court process to unfold.
“They say they are going to court—why did they not wait for the court but come out to the public?” he asked.
According to Jilbril, the NPP’s public posturing appears to be a calculated attempt to undermine the credibility of the Electoral Commission and stir unnecessary tension around the rerun.
He however commended the Electoral Commission Chair for her honesty in acknowledging earlier data discrepancies.
“Let’s give credit to the EC,” he said, noting that the Chair’s willingness to accept and correct errors is a sign of transparency.
Jilbril maintained that the NDC remains confident in the electoral body and is prepared for Friday’s rerun.
