Security expert Dr Kwesi Biney has made a compelling case for criminology graduates to look beyond academic theory and embrace practical, impactful engagement with society.

In a thought-provoking write-up titled “Criminology: A Study for All,” he outlines a roadmap built on three pillars—Investigate, Innovate, Inspire—to guide aspiring criminologists toward relevance and societal value.

Read Full Write-up:

CRIMINOLOGY: A STUDY FOR ALL

Criminology is more than just a course of study, it’s a calling to understand society, respond to threats, and build safer communities.

But here’s the hard truth: many graduates in Criminology and Security Studies often finish their degrees feeling lost, underutilized, or unsure of where to start.

The classroom gave you knowledge, but the field demands application.

If you want to stand out, create value, and make real impact in the world of security, social justice, and prevention, you must learn the 3i Secrets that every successful criminologist applies.

Let’s examine these secrets one after the other.

Ready, go !

♟️ INVESTIGATE.

Great criminologists are first great investigators, not just of crime, but of society’s deeper problems.

Start by conducting research into the most pressing issues affecting your community or target environment.

Whether it’s cultism, cybercrime, domestic violence, fraud, or youth-related offenses, gather facts, analyze patterns, and write down your observations.

Next, identify problems you can address based on your skills, interests, or field of specialization.

Remember: you can’t solve everything, but you can solve something.

Just as important, take time to study your target audience. These are the individuals or institutions that your solutions are meant to help.

Your target could be:
Parents
Schools
Business owners
Religious or community leaders
Youth groups
Companies
Or even online communities

Your role is to understand their fears, needs, and behaviors.

Note: Government agencies alone cannot combat all forms of insecurity.

This is your opportunity as an emerging criminologist to step in, offer fresh ideas, and contribute meaningfully to national and community safety.

♟️ INNOVATE.

After your investigation, it’s time to think like a builder. Innovation is the ability to transform knowledge into action, and ideas into impact.

Look at the problems you identified and ask yourself:
What can I create, organize, or simplify to help solve this?

Can I develop a training program?
Launch a school-based initiative?
Build a security education campaign?
Create a simple tech-based solution?

Use what you’ve learned in class, online, or in the field, and combine it with creativity.

Real innovation happens when you offer solutions that are practical, clear, and sustainable.

You don’t have to wait for a grant or government permission, start with what you have, where you are.

♟️ INSPIRE

Your work doesn’t end when you create a solution, it begins when you share that solution with the world.

True inspiration is born when people see you taking action.

You can start the following;

Host community dialogues.
Post your insights on social media.
Organize free safety seminars
Launch a digital awareness campaign.
Collaborate with schools, Religious institutions , or even the local police.

Let your impact be seen and felt.

Start small, but think big.

This is how you build influence, create networks, and open doors to bigger opportunities.

You don’t need to be a police officer, soldier, or government agent to make a difference.

The world of criminology is vast and the opportunities are endless for those willing to Investigate, Innovate, and Inspire.

So, rise. Be a voice. Take action.
Be Applied inclined.
