In a high-profile case before the Accra Circuit Court, two house helps, Patience Botwe (18) and Sarah Agyei (30), are facing charges of conspiracy and multiple counts of theft involving millions of Ghana Cedis. The victims of the alleged theft are Cecilia Abena Dapaah and her husband, Daniel Osei Kuffour.
According to the prosecution, the accused individuals are believed to have stolen huge sums of money and valuable items from the couple’s residence located in Abelemkpe, a suburb of Accra, between July and October 2022.
The accused, Patience, not only faces charges related to the theft of US$1 million, €300,000, and millions of Ghana Cedis but also stands accused of stealing assorted clothes, handbags, perfumes, and jewelry belonging to Cecilia Abena Dapaah, with an estimated total value of GH¢95,000 and US$95,000 respectively. Additionally, she is alleged to have stolen six pieces of Kente cloth worth GH¢90,000 and six sets of men’s suits valued at US$3,000, which belong to Daniel Osei Kuffour.
Furthermore, three other individuals, including Patience’s current and former boyfriends, as well as her father, have also been brought before the same court on charges related to the stolen funds.
During the hearing, Sarah Agyei was granted bail in the sum of GH¢1 million with two sureties, with the condition that the sureties must deposit their Ghana cards with the court’s registrar. It is noteworthy that Sarah’s bail was granted due to her being a breastfeeding mother.
The rest of the accused individuals, including Patience, her alleged accomplices, and her father, have been remanded in lawful custody pending further proceedings.
The case, presided over by Her Honour Susana Ekuful, commenced on Thursday, July 20, 2023. The accused have not yet entered their pleas, and the court is expected to consider additional evidence and testimonies in the coming days.
