Ghana is facing its first major challenge as the hosts of the 2023 African Games, as the Local Organizing Committee scrambles to find alternative accommodations for athletes and officials whose planned housing is not yet ready.
Team officials and athletes from seven African countries, including Egypt and Tunisia, have already arrived in Ghana for the games, which are set to begin on March 8, 2024.
However, the athletes and officials have not yet checked into the Games Village at the University of Ghana in Legon, which is intended to house the participants.
The delay is reportedly due to ongoing renovation works at the facility, including painting, fumigation, and other activities. The Games Village, which boasts 1700 rooms, is now expected to open on March 3, just five days before the opening ceremony of the games.
This setback comes after the African Games were initially postponed from last year due to challenges in getting the necessary infrastructure ready. However, the Legon Stadium, Borteyman Sports Complex, and other facilities that will host the various games have been commissioned and are now ready.
While this unexpected twist may pose a logistical challenge for the organisers, it is hoped that the situation will be resolved soon, allowing the athletes and officials to focus on their preparations for the games.
