According to sources close to ABC News Gh, there are imminent changes in the parliamentary landscape, notably the reconfiguration of key positions for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the formation of the campaign team for the upcoming general election.
One significant development is the potential replacement of Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the current Majority Leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Deputy Majority Leader. While it remains uncertain whether Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu will retain his role in government as the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, indications suggest that he may be appointed as the Chairman of the NPP’s 2024 Manifesto Committee.
In the event of Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s replacement, Frank Annoh Dompreh, the current Majority Chief Whip, is poised to ascend to the position of Deputy Majority Leader, creating an opening for Habib Iddrisu, the current First Deputy Chief Whip, to assume the role of Majority Chief Whip. Patricia Appiagyei is reportedly considered for the position of First Deputy Majority Chief Whip, following the nomination of Lydia Seyram Alhassan as Minister for Water Resources and Sanitation.
Furthermore, the vacancy for the position of Second Deputy Chief Whip is likely to be filled by Alex Tetteh Djornobuah, MP for Sefwi-Akontombra, according to sources. These anticipated changes are expected to be formalized during a pivotal meeting of the NPP’s National Council scheduled for Monday, February 19.
Meanwhile, the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is set to unveil his campaign team to the National Executive Committee and National Council on Monday, February 19, 2024. The former Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Dan Botwe, is speculated to be named as the campaign manager for the 2024 general election, following his recent removal from his ministerial post in President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s reshuffle last week.
These developments signify a dynamic reshaping of political leadership and strategy within the NPP as preparations intensify for the upcoming electoral contest.
