The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has urged the Prosecution to consider appropriate bail for the members of the Democracy Hub Protesters who are currently detained on charges including unlawful assembly.
Speaking during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana in Accra, the AG emphasized the importance of justice and fairness in handling the cases of the detained protesters, calling for their rights to be respected.
Dame also appealed to the Police to expedite their investigations and ensure they are concluded by the next Court sitting.
His statement underscored the need to discharge individuals against whom there is insufficient evidence, highlighting the crucial role of the judiciary in safeguarding democracy and individual freedoms.
He stressed the importance of timely justice, particularly for those whose continued detention may not be justified.
“As I always say, freedom is not free,” the AG noted, reminding attendees of the responsibilities that come with upholding democracy.
He reinforced that the rule of law is fragile and must be upheld to ensure the gains of the past are preserved for future generations.
