Presidential candidate for the Movement for Change, Mr. Alan Kyerematen, has condemned the Ghana Police Service for its unlawful handling of the Democracy Hub Group protesters.
He criticized the police for denying the protesters access to legal counsel, family, and essential items like food, water, and medication after their arrest.
Mr. Kyerematen’s remarks came during a press conference at the Ghana International Press Center in Accra on Sunday, September 29, 2024.
Addressing the issue, Mr. Kyerematen admitted that some of the protesters’ actions during the demonstration were excessive and may have breached public peace and order.
However, he acknowledged the professionalism of the police officers who managed the protests over the three-day period, commending their conduct during the demonstrations.
He emphasized that despite the successful crowd management, the post-arrest treatment of the protesters was a grave infringement on their rights.
Mr. Kyerematen further criticized the judiciary, describing the refusal of presiding judges to grant bail to the accused in a misdemeanor case as an abuse of judicial discretion.
“This decision is a violation of constitutional law, human rights, judicial practice, and established case laws,” he asserted, calling for the rights of the protesters to be respected in line with Ghana’s democratic values.
