Presidential aspirant Alan Kyerematen has unveiled a transformative plan to reform Ghana’s Free Senior High School (SHS) programme, focusing on long-term sustainability and equipping graduates for life beyond the classroom.

Speaking during the Presidential Encounters 2024 hosted by the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, Mr. Kyerematen stressed the need to enhance the policy’s effectiveness by addressing critical gaps in infrastructure, curriculum, and post-graduation pathways.

Under his Great Transformational Plan (GTP), Mr. Kyerematen proposed reforms targeting five key areas: financial sustainability, infrastructure development, curriculum enhancement, educator capacity building, and structured transitions for SHS graduates.

He emphasized the need to secure sustainable funding for the programme, while addressing pressing infrastructure deficits such as inadequate classrooms and teaching facilities.

These measures, he argued, are crucial for improving the quality of education and ensuring the programme’s success.

Mr. Kyerematen also called for a review of the SHS curriculum, questioning its relevance in preparing students for modern economic demands.

He advocated for capacity-building initiatives for teachers and non-teaching staff to ensure effective delivery of quality education.

His plan includes a compulsory one-year apprenticeship and internship programme to provide practical skills training and certification for graduates.

This initiative aims to bridge the gap between education and employment, equipping students with artisanal, entrepreneurial, and professional skills aligned with market needs.

In a bid to integrate technology into education, Mr. Kyerematen proposed the establishment of 100,000 free satellite internet hotspots nationwide, including in all secondary schools.

This digitalization policy, he stated, would revolutionize teaching and learning while empowering content creators and students burdened by data costs.
