Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has thrown his weight behind parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Afriyie with a GH¢410,000 donation to support her campaign ahead of the crucial Ablekuma North rerun.

The financial backing is seen as a major boost to Afriyie’s bid to reclaim her seat in a highly contested rerun scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025.

The move underscores Bawumia’s strategic involvement in key parliamentary battles as he positions himself ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Dr. Bawumia’s contribution comes alongside another major financial support from NPP presidential hopeful and Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, who has donated GH¢200,000 to the campaign.

In addition, Acheampong has reportedly disbursed $6,500 directly to coordinators and polling station chairpersons in the constituency to reinforce grassroots mobilization.

These combined efforts reflect the high stakes surrounding the rerun, which affects 19 polling stations and was ordered by the Electoral Commission following disputes over the December 2024 results.

Despite the party’s initial legal opposition to the rerun, which was dismissed by the Accra High Court on July 9, Nana Akua Afriyie has remained defiant.

“Tomorrow I am contesting,” she boldly declared, reaffirming her belief that she rightfully won the original vote.

The NPP, in response to the court ruling, has now officially resumed campaigning in the constituency, with its General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, publicly backing Afriyie and citing a 414-vote margin in her favor.

The rerun is anticipated to be fiercely contested, with tensions still simmering months after the disputed elections.

NPP supporters have flooded the constituency in full campaign mode, galvanized by the Electoral Commission’s decision to retain Afriyie’s photo on the ballot.
