Dr. Hayford Ayerakwa, a senior researcher at Africa Policy Lens, has described Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the most credible and formidable contender ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2026 presidential primaries.

Speaking in an assessment of the evolving political landscape, Dr. Ayerakwa explained that Bawumia’s track record in public service and his strong showing in the 2024 elections have elevated his profile across party lines.

“There are a lot of good qualities that people in the party and even laid-back ones believe he has,” he told ABC News GH.

He further noted that Bawumia’s northern origin offers a strategic advantage for the party, describing it as a marketable asset.

“His integrity, and the fact that he has been in public service all these years, stands out. No vice president has performed in the manner H.E. Bawumia has,” Dr. Ayerakwa added, emphasizing how close Bawumia came to clinching victory in the 2024 presidential race.
