President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana’s reintroduced road toll system will go fully digital, with no physical tollbooths or manual collection.
Speaking at the 9th Ghana CEO Summit in Accra on Monday, May 26, 2025, President Mahama explained that tolls will be automatically billed to drivers through mobile money wallets or bank accounts linked to their Ghana Cards.
The system builds on Ghana’s existing identity infrastructure, which President Mahama said recently attracted interest from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The previous toll system was suspended in 2021 by the NPP government due to congestion and inefficiencies.
However, Mahama says the new digital approach will eliminate those issues, reduce revenue leakages, and enhance compliance.
He stressed that the initiative is part of a broader strategy to use technology to boost infrastructure financing and reset Ghana’s economy.
